We have had quite a few variations of Pomfret fry. I am doing a very simple one today in memory of the Grinch who stole Christmas. When I went on a trip with a friend who was visiting, I got a few old pictures unearthed from the messy cupboards.
I don’t know why they were sent here and there. Maybe I was supposed to pray for many people whose ashes were submerged in my absence. The journey of immersion is a difficult one I believe.
I did my own little version of it later. I was told to wash many clothes one by one. My perspective remained a bit fixed. And hence I had to get some help to laugh at the weird drinks mixed.
Ride the tidal wave somebody said. And I thought that it had nothing to do with my being so afraid. It had a lot to do with a simple thought. What could I have done on my own in different places I visited. The truth was- nothing.
Every journey reminded me of another. Every person I met was a version of some kind of mother or father. The ideas that I got were the true inspiration. And I had a problem with not much perspiration. That’s when I realised my skin pores were blocked. And I needed a very thorough scrub-a-dub-dub.
Benaras doesn’t have Pomfret Fry
We are going through some simple ways to address Benaras obsessed people. It was called Kashi earlier. And I always thought it had something to do with cough & cold.
Apparently whenever people went to Benaras they needed a lot of cough syrup later.

We are suggesting a very different way to look at it. Look Ma, how far we have come!
Please wear all the clothes that have been gifted to you. Or you can fold them and keep them neatly in a cupboard.
Do get rid of a few that you no longer need anymore.
Simple routine for Pomfret Fry
We have many people who cook almost daily. Some of them cook very well almost every day. Many of them cook some things much better than others because they can do it almost with their eyes closed.
Here’s my version of a memory from this Lakkhi Pujo which remained a tradition again this year. My mother insisted saying we have to do this as long as she is able to do it.

We have been penalized for this festive celebration at home all over again. Why?
Kids have suggested to give up these traditions and go out for a movie and popcorn treat instead. Maybe also dinner outside. Don’t go by the clothes- we are looking at a very severe haircut now.
We will consider this proposal the entire week.
Story around Pomfret
I can’t remember my first tasting of pomfret. It was a rare treat for us as growing up we lived further away from the coastal areas and usually had freshwater fish. It had a peculiar fishy smell which we identified later as the smell of the sea. Definitely something that is a bit of an acquired taste.
My mother used to make this curry with lots of garlic and tomatoes- a bit sweet and sour which she called a Goan Pomfret curry. Not sure where she had it for the first time either.

Anyways, we are getting to a simple Pomfret fry with a chilli garlic marinade. I am not adding any coconut to it.
I have a stash of kachampulli which I might use with some coconut for another seafish called emperor fish. Never heard of that before. Very fishy! Might have written and talked about solkadhi earlier- alas no kokum here. We will make some kind of “creatively inspired” version of a weird mix for that Emperor. I recommend lots of red chilies with it.
We are going to wear our inauthenticity with pride now for this pomfret fry.
There has been too much of classical traditional recipes in the last few weeks! On popular demand, we will do some mucking around the kitchen.
Pomfret Fry- we will keep it very simple
A good fish doesn’t need so much of hard work. Just a few spices and marinade. I used garlic and a spicy chilli oil used in many schezwan dishes. And then a bit of bread crumb to coat it.
I didn’t add a squeeze of lemon but maybe you can do that too. Fry it on medium-low fire. And make sure it doesn’t burn. That’s all I remember from watching my mothers and aunts all along.
A quick fix for a tasty lunch or dinner with or without a few friends here. If you are not used to the smell, then you may find it overpowering.

Just open the windows and let the place air out a bit. If you are working in a closed airconditioned kitchen, this will be quite overwhelming. We don’t recommend any guests in the kitchen while working on this simple recipe.
Of course, for true foodies and fish lovers, this is not a problem. It’s a feeling of homecoming. Mesho and mechho are both in the same team in this particular case. Nothing else matters. We don’t even need any rice, pasta or bread with it. Do we need napkins, I don’t know. It maybe finger licking good.
The frying was messy and the coating kind of came off. š But don’t throw that fried garlicky oily breadcrumbs remaining in the pan! It’s actually delicious with a bit of rice and greens alongside.
Do check the video of the recipe with the link given below. Try yourself and let us know how it was for you.
